Savannah
Founded in 1733, Savannah is "Georgia's
First City" and one of the most
romantic, and haunted!, destinations
in the United States. This charming city
is rich with history and Southern hospitality.
The Historic District fills Savannah
with twenty-two picturesque city squares,
extraordinary architecture and lush botanicals.
Only 38 miles away (about 1 hour of
scenic driving), this coastal city is
just an earshot away from Hilton Head
Island. You can actually see it from
the southern end of the island. It’s
located just south of Hilton Head, nestled
in the most northeastern corner of Georgia.
The city sits along the Savannah River,
and is tucked 17 miles in from the Atlantic
Ocean.
The history in Savannah runs deep, starting
with its discovery in 1773 by General
James Oglethorpe. The city owes its beautiful
layout to General Oglethorpe, who designed
wide open streets intertwined with shady
public squares and parks. These were
originally used for town meeting places
and centers of business. Today, they’re
an irreplaceable part of Savannah’s
landscape, along with the outstanding
expanse of Spanish moss.
Savannah has been the site for numerous
movies, including Forrest Gump and Midnight
in the Garden of Good and Evil. Because
of the book and movie, Midnight in the
Garden of Good and Evil, Savannah has
gained significant notoriety. The book
describes the setting of Savannah to
a T, and also details a story of cross-dressing,
voodoo and murder!
Savannahians renovated cotton warehouses
into a quaint stretch of restaurants,
galleries, and boutiques known as River
Street. This popular stop is perfect
to grab some oysters on the half shell,
stroll and shop down the cobblestoned
street, and kick back to watch the boats
go by while enjoying some of the famous
local sweets.
There is much to do in Savannah, including
shopping, dining, professional sports,
numerous art galleries and theatre performances.
